Checkout

Checkout is how a customer finishes. They can email themselves a quote with no card setup. Cards are a separate switch, and they stay off until Stripe is connected.

Open Sales & Finance → Sales Configuration → Webstore, then select Checkout.

Quote only

Accept card payments is on Checkout. Leave it off when a quote is enough.

Leave Accept card payments off. At checkout the customer sees Email me this quote. They get a link to review, sign, and pay later, or to request changes.

That order shows up as a quote request, not as something waiting for you to confirm. See Your First Order.

This is enough to go live.

Card payments

  1. Connect Stripe under Payments. The steps are in Accepting Cards.
  2. Come back to Checkout and turn on Accept card payments.

Until Stripe can take charges, this page warns you to connect Stripe in Payment settings. Customers will not see Pay & place order until that warning is gone.

When cards are on, checkout offers two paths:

Customer choice What happens
Pay & place order Places the order and holds or charges the card, then sends it to you to confirm
Email me this quote Sends a link they can share and pay later

How much you collect

Under Capture & deposits:

Field Options What it means
Card capture Authorize, manager confirms (preauthorization) A hold, not a charge, until you confirm
Card capture Auto-capture on payment The card is charged when the customer pays
Amount to collect Full balance The whole order
Amount to collect Percentage deposit Only the Deposit % now. The rest stays on the order

Authorize, manager confirms is the safer default while you're learning the queue. You still click Confirm on the sales order before the kitchen treats it as a go.

Note

There's no card-only fee. To cover your costs, set a Service Fee on the location (Locations → open the location → Service Fee). It's added to every order, however the customer pays. The store shows its name, percent and explanation on the menu, the cart, checkout and the quote page before the customer commits.

Gratuity, utensils, and Require e-signature before payment are optional. Leave them off until you want them. An e-signature means the customer types their name before a card payment.

Common Questions

Q: I enabled cards, but customers only see the quote button.
A: Stripe isn't finished. Open Payments and complete onboarding until it says you can accept card payments. Then confirm Accept card payments is on.

Q: Does a quote charge the customer?
A: No. Email me this quote doesn't take a card. They can pay later from the link if you've turned cards on.

Q: Can I switch from a hold to charging immediately?
A: Yes. Change Card capture to Auto-capture on payment. The page saves when you pause. Orders already placed keep the capture mode they were placed with.
